The Southwest Management District takes immense pride in reflecting on Houston’s unforgettable turn as a host city for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Those historic weeks were about far more than world-class soccer.They were about cultural unity,neighborhood pride and showcasing the dynamic character of Houston and the Southwest District to a global audience.

A City and District United by Soccer

From June 14 to July 4,NRG Stadium(or “Houston Stadium” for the tournament)welcomed hundreds of thousands of fans from more than 200 countries.Meanwhile,the Southwest District transformed into a vibrant hub of celebration,leveraging our renowned diversity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Our free “First Kick:Community Soccer&Fitness Festival” at the Alief Community Center set the tone,drawing families,residents,business owners and dignitaries for a kickoff packed with food,fitness and fun.

Special thanks to our community partners — including the International Management District,Westchase District and Alief ISD — and Houston Mayor John Whitmire for making this event a!0 reflection of Houston’s uniqueness.

“Even with rainy weather,the energy stayed high as Houstonians of all ages came together in a celebration of community,unity and the spirit that makes our city special,” Mayor Whitmire posted after the event.“Thank you,Event Chairwoman Dawn Lin,Southwest Management District and International Management District for helping make the event possible.”

Showcasing Our Global Tapestry

Throughout the tournament,international flags lined Bellaire Boulevard and other major corridors,symbolizing the District’s embrace of the world.

The Southwest District placed flags representing the countries that played in this year’s World Cup,while the Sharpstown Rotary Club took care of placing U.S.flags.

Southwest Houston stood as a cultural alternative to the city’s central Fan Festival,giving residents and visitors a unique experience at local businesses,particularly sports bars and restaurants.

Spirits were especially high at a FIFA World Cup 2026 Watch Party in collaboration with the Sharpstown Rotary Club,Taiwan Yes Houston,Korean American Chamber of Commerce,Chinese Community Center,Asian Real Estate Association of America Houston,Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston,Asian Chamber of Commerce,Sister Cities of Houston and the Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce Texas.

As the FIFA Committee Chair,Director Dawn Lin expressed appreciation to everyone who joined the District in celebrating the World Cup in Houston.“We loved seeing the community come together around the world’s game,” Lin said.

“It was a wonderful international representation,music,food and new friendships,” she said.

Economic Impact and Community Benefit

Our district worked closely with local hotels and hospitality partners to ensure readiness,drive competitive pricing and encourage flexible booking,amplifying the economic benefit.

Before the first match kicked off,the Southwest District gathered some of Houston’s most passionate and forward-thinking leaders for a special luncheon at Fung’s Kitchen.

We were honored to have representatives from NTDTV Houston,Valkyrie Media Group,Trevino Consulting Group,Texas Business Leader Alliance,Career Gear,Denenburg Development,Amegy Bank,Remodel HTX,ESPN 97.5 Soccer Matters,Houston Astros,Westchase District,The Epoch Times,SPHERE Club,One World Strategy Group,Htown Restaurant Group,Washington Times and Annise Parker’s Office join us for those early talks.

A Lasting Legacy

The World Cup’s legacy in the Southwest District goes beyond the matches.We seeded new relationships among business leaders,forged stronger bonds among our multicultural communities and inspired a new generation of youth through soccer clinics and community events.

Was it worth it?We share the sentiment of Chris Canetti,president of Houston’s World Cup host committee,who told the media:

 “The simple answer is:hell yeah,it was worth it.… When you look at the energy,the excitement,the joy,the memories that were made for so many people — that,in itself,tells you it was worth it.”

Ryan Walsh,Chief Executive Officer of the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority,has confirmed the city is actively pursuing bids for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2031 Men’s Rugby World Cup.The Southwest District stands ready to welcome the world again — and to keep building a future as diverse,dynamic and united as the beautiful game itself.
