David Hacker is painter, sculptor, potter, and poet working out of his studio in Andes, New York. Born in Portland, Oregon in 1946, Hacker was drafted into the military and served in Vietnam from 1967-1968. He began his transition into art during the 1980s, studying art at various institutions before earning his BA and MFA from University of California Santa Barbara in 1984. 

 

David Hacker’s paintings feature bold color choices against natural tones, and heavy marks both in the form of brush strokes and scrapes. They are intensely layered, creating a sense of depth, as though one could look through each layer to find new situations. The organic blocks of color and meandering brushwork together create a psychedelic space that is also reminiscent of the deep forests in the Catskills around Hacker’s studio. The layering and re-working evident on each canvas speaks to Hacker’s focus on self discovery and expansion.

 

Inarticulate Paradise is the artist’s first major exhibition of all new works in over a decade, and his first showing in Texas. The exhibition will open to the public on October 30th from Noon to 4:00 pm, and will be on display through December 18, 2021. 

 

David Hacker es pintor, escultor, alfarero y poeta que trabaja en su estudio en Andes, Nueva York. Nacido en Portland, Oregon en 1946, Hacker fue reclutado por el ejército y sirvió en Vietnam desde 1967 hasta 1968. Comenzó su transición al arte durante la década de 1980, estudiando arte en varias instituciones antes de obtener su BA y MFA de la Universidad de California en Santa Bárbara en 1984. 

 

Las pinturas de David Hacker llevan colores dinámicos contra tonos naturales y marcas fuertes tanto en forma de pinceladas como raspaduras. Están intensamente superpuestos, creando una sensación de profundidad y liminalidad, como si uno pudiera mirar a través de cada capa para encontrar nuevas situaciones. Los bloques orgánicos de color y la pincelada serpenteante juntos crean un espacio psicodélico, que también recuerda a los bosques profundos en los Catskills alrededor del estudio de Hacker. Las capas y reelaboraciones evidentes en cada lienzo hablan del enfoque de Hacker en el autodescubrimiento y la expansión.

 

Inarticulate Paradise (Paraíso Inarticulado) es la primera gran exposición del artista de todas las obras nuevas en más de una década, y su primera muestra en Texas. La exposición se abrirá al público el 30 de octubre desde el mediodía hasta las 4:00 p.m. y estará en exhibición hasta el 18 de diciembre de 2021.
