TIFFANY’S TALKING POINTS

We held our first Pop Up event of the summer with the residents of Tanglewilde. See our follow-up with them in this edition. Council is set to decide on a water rate increase. Find out what this means for you and take time to give us your input in our survey. I have also included my official statement regarding the General Land Office and their distribution of funds in response to Hurricane Harvey, more specifically, the unequal distribution of those federal funds. See my statement here.

We are planning a career fair in August and have partnered with wonderful organizations to make this a success. Make plans to attend and/or participate as an employer or individual looking for work. Registration for employers will go live next week. Stay tuned for more information.

Happy Father’s Day from District F.

CONSTITUENT UPDATES

City Council Considers Water and Wastewater Increase

Last week Houston Public Works brought to Council a plan that would increase rates for Houston residents. According to the department the recommended water and wastewater rates create a framework for a sustainable utility in alignment with the City’s priorities, stated in the Resilient Houston plan. This recognizes the critical role for the region as the owner of significant water rights granted by the State of Texas, the responsibility to serve Houston, recognition of Houston’s aging infrastructure, historic inequities in infrastructure investment, and the impact to each Houstonian – from financial impacts to clear and transparent customer service.Council is scheduled to vote on the increase this week. Here is what you need to know.

Houston Public Works is recommending that City Council adopt updates for water & wastewater rates to cover the increasing cost of service including:

  1. Resources to continue water & wastewater services
  2. Maintenance of water & wastewater infrastructure
  3. Reduced water main breaks
  4. Reduced sanitary sewer overflows
  5. Improved resilience against hurricanes, freezes & climate change
  6. Ability to comply with the Consent Decree
  7. Ability to comply with federal regulations rather than pay penalties for violations caused by lack of investment

What does this mean for Houstonians? It is estimated that over the next five years, about 60% of consumers would see about a $5 increase in their monthly bill beginning in July. This rate would increase over the next five years (see chart).

Houston Public Works Launches ‘Engage Houston’ Website

Houston Public Works has launched a public engagement website, EngageHouston.org. The site is designed to make it easier to find information about improvement projects in Houston. Users will have the option to sign up for updates via mail, email, phone, or text message.

“Engage Houston will give Houstonians real-time information and points of contact for questions related to improvement projects,” said Houston Public Works Director, Carol Haddock. “This website has streamlined how we deliver information and receive feedback from the community.”

The community is invited to setup an account and send feedback regarding design and current projects.

June is Junk Waste Month
Solid Waste Management Department’s junk waste collection crews will collect all debris placed out for collection in the month of June 2021.  This includes both junk waste and tree waste.
A few reminders:

  • No more than 8 cubic yards (about the size of a minivan) of junk waste may be placed at the curb for collection.
  • A maximum of four cubic yards of building material (not to include roofing, shingles, brick, plaster or concrete) generated by the resident.
  • Appliances containing refrigerant must have a tag attached to them certifying a qualified technician has removed the refrigerant.
  • Solid Waste management is NOT allowed to collect any material that was generated by contractors.

Solid Waste crews are working to remain on schedule with the support of contractor crews, we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused the residents, we’re making every effort to avoid delays in our service.
