Welcome to the virtual Houston Community College 2021 State of the College event. The theme of our event this year is “Deep in the Heart of Houston,” as 2021 is HCC’s 50th Anniversary, and we are proud that we have been educating and training Houstonians to meet the workforce demands in the region.
This virtual program will feature remarks by the HCC Board Chair, Chancellor, Faculty Senate President, as well as student testimonials and inspiring videos. The event will also include a panel discussion with leaders of area Chambers of Commerce, who will discuss Houston’s changing educational, economic, and societal landscape amidst the pandemic, as we navigate the future together.

Dr. Valerie Daniels-Carter is one of the most preeminent business owners in the United States. In addition to auspiciously commandeering several restaurants branded operations in the United States, she has been widely recognized for her adroit business ingenuity. She is the President and CEO of V&J Foods, Holding Companies, Inc. (V&J Holdings), a multi-brand/multi-state operation. It is recognized as the largest female owned franchise organization in the country. Dr. Daniels-Carter’s quick-service restaurant empire operations are comprised of Auntie Anne’s Soft Pretzels, Burger King, Coffee Beanery, Nino’s Southern Sides, MyYoMy Frozen Yogurt, Pizza Hut and Captain D’s Seafood along with numerous Real Estate ventures. She is also a minority owner of the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Great Texas Hospitality Worker Vaccine Drive is a joint project of the Texas Restaurant Association, the Texas Food & Wine Alliance, and Good Work Austin. It started as a group effort between Anna Tauzin (TRA), Mariam Parker (Texas Food & Wine Alliance), and Chef Michael Fojtasek (Olamaie, Good Work Austin), who all knew that restaurant workers needed specific and targeted help to make sure they get access to and information about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Request for Bilingual Volunteers for COVID-19 Vaccination site at NRG Park
|
|
|
As you’ve read in the news, FEMA has set up a large COVID-19 Vaccination site at NRG Park, serving 6,000 people per day. Because of the large number of our community coming through, there’s a need for bilingual volunteers to help those whose first language may not be English.
There’s an urgent need for Vietnamese and Mandarin-speaking volunteers. Below are some of the highlights of the request:
- The NRG Park CVC (Community Vaccination Center) runs 7 days a week, from 8am to 6pm (or until the last vaccine for the day is given)
- There are 2 shifts each day: 7a-1pm and 1pm-7p
- Volunteers must be 18 years or older
- Volunteers need to have an advanced knowledge of both languages English-Mandarin/English-Vietnamese, as some of the translations are medical in nature
- Volunteers MAY be eligible to receive a vaccine at the end of the day if there are doses left over that must be used. This will vary day to day and are not guaranteed.
- This is an outdoor volunteer position and they will be on their feet most, if not all, of the day
- Breakfast and Lunch will be served and snacks, coffee, and water are available throughout the day
- You can sign up for as many shifts as you able to serve
