October: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are producing a video in October to raise awareness and would like to interview breast cancer survivors in District F.  If you would like to participate in this video, or you know someone who is a survivor or has a story related to breast cancer, please contact our office: [email protected] or (832) 393-3002.

 
The City of Houston’s Rental Assistance Program is still accepting enrollment from landlords and renters.  To receive up to $2,112 for back due rent, apply here.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a nationwide eviction moratorium, effective through December 31, 2020.  In order to be covered by this moratorium, you must sign and submit a declaration to your landlord.  The moratorium and declarations are available here in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, Urdu, and French.

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15th to October 15th every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the Hispanic American community.  Through October 15th, we will be dedicating this section of our newsletter towards celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.  Stay tuned for our upcoming video spotlighting the Hispanic community of District F.

Mayor’s Task Force on Policing Reform

On September 30th, Mayor Turner announced that the Task Force on Policing Reform has released its recommendations.  To view the press conference, click on the image.

Mayor Turner has also signed an Executive Order that authorizes the Cite and Release program.  Houston Police officers will be able to issue citations instead of arresting individuals for certain Class A and Class B misdemeanors.  To view the press release, click here.  To view the press conference, click here.

 
Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Yesterday, City Council passed a resolution to recognize the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Houston.  Thank you to Council Member Gallegos for your efforts on this item.  Houston exists on the land of the Sana, Caohuiltecan, and Karankawa people, to mention a few. Nigeria Independence Day
On October 1st, 1960, Nigeria officially became a sovereign nation by declaring its independence from British colonial rule.  We would like to wish a happy Independence Day to the members of our Nigerian community!
