Coronavirus Update

Keeping Houstonians safe is the primary focus of our local government. Wednesday, the City of Houston announced an Emergency Health Declaration as a result of a newly confirmed case of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in the area. This most recent case is the first known instance of the virus being spread via the community (as opposed to via international travel).

The Houston Health Department also confirmed the city’s third COVID-19 case, a female in the 15 to 25 age range. She recently traveled to New York state and is currently quarantined in her home. Despite these new occurrences, the risk for infection of the virus is low, and we encourage you to remain calm.

The city’s emergency declaration paves the way for Houston to receive federal resources to fight the spread of coronavirus. According to medical experts, the best weapon to avoid spreading coronavirus continues to be consistent and diligent hand washing. Please keep in mind that there are some citizens who may be more vulnerable to illness than others. They include those who are 60 years old or older or gave compromised immune systems or underlying health conditions.

Events sponsored or organized by the City of Houston scheduled to take place in the month of March have either been canceled or postponed.

METRO Ramps Up Safety Efforts

Many District J residents rely on public transportation to get to work, school and other places. In an effort to help curtail the spread of COVID-19, METRO is taking measures to ramp up cleaning and communication procedures. These efforts include putting a higher emphasis on disinfecting surfaces, reminding the public of safety recommendations via posters, issuing service alerts and keeping up to date on public health and emergency developments. Read More
