A WORD FROM COUNCIL MEMBER THOMAS

“It is my sincere honor to represent District F as your Council Member.  With profound gratitude, I thank you for placing your trust in me.  This tremendous opportunity that I have been given to affect positive change does not escape me.  As I look to the road ahead, I know we will be able to meet the challenge.

I have never been more optimistic about our residents, our community leaders, and our district.  We have much work in front of us, but, with your help, I am confident we will be able to find common ground and solutions to the issues that are most important to us.

In the spirit of inclusiveness, I hope you will join me on this new journey.  I hope you will join me in striving for a better tomorrow.  And I hope you will join me in making our district as great as I know it can be.”

COUNCIL MEMBER IN THE DISTRICT

It was a pleasure to have a conversation with the residents of Super Neighborhood 17 and Bellaire West HOA.  Thank you for your invitation and your attendance!  Among the salient topics discussed were the Chelford City CIP project along Westpark Dr, speed cushion applications, and our upcoming Census 2020 town hall.

I’d like to also give a big thank you to the Planning, General Services, and Parks Departments, as well as the Office of Complete Communities, for inviting me to their Neighborhood Support Team (NST) meeting.  Stakeholder turnout was terrific and we received much-needed input that will shape the direction of the Complete Communities initiative going forward.  Please take the survey below to let us know what needs to be improved:

Finally, as Chair of the Housing and Community Development Committee, I’m happy to announce that the Evening Star senior living development that is proposed for District F has received a recommendation for the 9% housing tax credit. The developer’s goal is revitalization of senior housing in our district and I fully support this project.

CIP PROJECT UPDATES

CHELFORD CITY DIVERSION PACKAGE #1

Earlier this month, residents had noticed foul odors at the project site. The culprit was the Upper Braes Lift Station Headworks Building. This lift station is under the rehab project. The raw sewage bypassed the lift station and pumped directly into the bar screen inside the headworks building.

After our office contacted Public Works regarding this issue, an action plan has been implemented:
-close the doors of the headworks building during night time,
-cover the back door (facing the Royal Oaks neighborhood) as much as possible
-close the wet well hatch door inside the headworks building
-utilize the Cherri-D misting odor neutralizer at the bar screen and dumpster
-remove the trash from the dumpster as often as possible

ALIEF NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER
The General Services Department is slated to start demolition of the existing Alief Community Center on March 8, 2020.  We are coordinating with GSD on a date for a ceremony, and on the process of residents securing a brick from the ACC.  We will provide an update in the coming weeks.  Construction of the NEW Alief Neighborhood Center is slated begin this fall.  Please click on the matrix below to view the relocation of activities, and click on the video to see a virtual tour of the new facility.
The $60M development is a first of its kind in the City of Houston. It will include a NEW library, skate park, classrooms, state of the art gym, community garden and more. TWENTY YEARS in the making!

Special appreciation to the neighborhood heroes who helped manifest this facility for the next generation(s) to come: Anne and Henry Williams, Dan Hrna, Natali Lacassa, Francisco Garcia, Kevin Kebebe, Barbara Quattro and a host of others.
