PARTNERSHIP SETS SAIL
On March 7, Councilmember Thomas met with the Seafarers International Union of Houston. The Union supports activities at the Port of Houston–
one of the busiest in the nation–by working to keep everything running smoothly and providing a safe harbor for all who visit the area. At the meeting with the Councilmember, they discussed future partnerships and the Seafarers’ apprenticeship program.  
 
 
CELEBRATING WOMEN
On March 9, Councilmemeber Thomas attended the 12th annual ‘Rise to the Top’ luncheon, which celebrated International Women’s Day.  Hosted by The Greater Houston Partnership, the event was an opportunity for candid conversations from female executives about the challenges and triumphs of succeeding as a woman in today’s business environment.
 
 
HAPPY HOLI
On March 19, Councilmember Thomas celebrated Holi by joining a ceremony to help usher in the triumph of “good” over “evil” and welcome the brightness of spring. Also known as the Hindu Festival of Colors, the holiday includes a free-spirited play between friends, family, and community where the throwing of colored powder is considered a symbol of  love.
 
 
HOUSING & COMMUNITY AFFAIRS MEETING
On March 21, Councilmember Thomas chaired the Housing & Community Affairs committee meeting where the Housing and Community Development Department presented updates on affordable housing projects, federal grants, incorporating more three-bedroom homes into plans, as well as an update on the Bethume Empowerment Center. THE ALLIANCE SET TO UPGADE ITS FACILITIES
 

On March 13, Congressman Al Green presented The Alliance with a check for $1.5 million in federal funds to help upgrade its facilities and reduce its building’s carbon footprint. The 37-year-old organization, headquartered at 6420 Hillcroft Avenue, has helped more than 200,000 individuals reach their personal goals. The Alliance works to improve self-sufficiency and the quality of life for underserved residents, immigrants and refugees.
 
 
HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
SPRING 2023 COMMUNITY MEETING

The Housing and Community Development (HCD) staff will hold their Spring Community Meeting on March 28. This is an opportunity to give input on the Draft 2023 Annual Action Plan. Over the next year, approximately $45 million in federal entitlement grants will be available to improve Houston’s neighborhoods and the quality of life for families. 

The meeting is at 6:00PM at Acres Homes Multi-Service Center, 6719 W Montgomery Road.

COMMUNITY LEADERS
On April 22, Councilmember Thomas joined Commissioner Leslie Briones,  Houston Dash midfielder Sophie Schmidt, community leaders, and advocates at the Women’s Empowerment Expo at the Tracey Gee Community Center.The Expo was an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women throughout history, recognize the achievements of women today, and network with your neighbors.
 
 
THOMAS APPOINTED TO NLC COMMUNITY & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
On March 10, Councilmember Thomas was appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) 2023 Community and Economic Development committee. She will provide strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities on housing, economic opportunity, and entrepreneurship. As a member of the committee, Thomas will also play a key role in shaping NLC’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of America’s cities, towns and villages before Congress and with the administration.
 
 
TOUR OF THE PORT OF HOUSTON
On March 22, District F staff toured the Port of Houston aboard a Houston Fire Department Fire Boat. Prior to the tour there was a discussion about future partnerships and the many small business and job opportunities at the port.

COMMUNITY NEWS
FREE COACH-MENTOR TRAINING WORKSHOP
On March 31, a 2-hour workshop will be conducted by the U.S. Soccer Foundation that is intended to build a coaches’ capacity to create positive connections with youth by teaching them how to also serve as mentors.

The training is applicable across a variety of team sports, including football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and tennis. The program incorporates evidence-based practices for creating an inclusive team environment.
