As temperatures rise, the City of Houston has activated its Public Health Heat Emergency Plan to help keep our community safe. Today, Friday, August 9, the city is opening 80 cooling centers across the city for those needing a break from the heat.
Free Transportation to Cooling Centers If you or someone you know needs assistance getting to a cooling center, please call 3-1-1 for a free ride. This service is available for transportation to and from the centers only.

Stay Safe During the Heat During these hot summer months, please remember to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat, wear light-colored clothing, and check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and those with health conditions.
Recognize Heat-Related Illnesses
- Heat Exhaustion: Weakness, dizziness, excessive sweating, nausea. Move to a cooler place, drink water, and rest.
- Heat Stroke: High body temperature, confusion, red and hot skin, no sweating. This is a medical emergency—call 9-1-1 immediately.
