Travelers headed southwest from central Houston on the Southwest Freeway (U.S. 59/I-69) are bound to notice a bright, new billboard sign beckoning them to the astoundingly diverse collection of ethnic restaurants, shops, supermarkets and other businesses in the Southwest Management District.
The roadside sign looms over the highway’s Hillcroft Avenue entrance/exit at the District’s northeast gateway near PlazAmericas Mall and the rest of the Sharpstown area, leading to cuisine, clothing and other products native to Latin America, Asia and Africa.
Close by is Bellaire Boulevard, connecting Houston Christian University and Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital on the east to teeming shopping centers that feature hundreds of eateries on the west.
Also along the corridor are the Asian banks that give the District its “Asian Wall Street” nickname.
The District is expanding its economic development promotional efforts to billboards to further boost the area’s success and emphasize the fun that awaits visitors from the metropolitan area and around the world.
Key to the non-stop celebration of food and other cultural pathways is the District’s $1.1 million annual funding of localized public safety programs. They include enhanced security patrols, mobile and stationary security cameras, graffiti and litter abatement, and many more projects.
Coming soon: A billboard promoting the Liberty Fest, the District’s annual, free, pre-July 4 festival that includes a fireworks show over PlazAmericas.
