University of Houston Senior Gains Hands-On Experience While Promoting Youth Involvement
The Southwest Management District is delighted to introduce our newest intern, Cameron Nguyen, a senior at the University of Houston. With a strong academic background and a passion for community engagement, Cameron joins us to explore the unique world of public service and economic development, while gaining hands-on experience in an area close to her heart. Her presence reflects our district’s ongoing commitment to education and to nurturing youth involvement within our local communities.
A Local Talent with Big Aspirations
Born and raised in Houston’s Cypress area, Cameron attended Bridgeland High School and has been pursuing her studies at the University of Houston since 2021. Now in her senior year, she is set to graduate in May 2025 with a focus on supply chain management—a field she’s eager to put into practice. The internship offers her a unique chance to understand how local governance impacts her community directly.
Discovering a Community Gem
Cameron first learned about the Southwest Management District’s internship opportunity from a longtime acquaintance, who encouraged her to consider the district’s impactful work. Intrigued by the chance to contribute to her neighborhood, Cameron decided to explore the possibility. After meeting with the district’s staff and board member David Peters, she was invited to attend a board meeting.
“I didn’t even know the Southwest Management District existed before this,” Cameron confesses, reflecting on how the experience has opened her eyes. “Annie mentioned all the incredible work they’re doing, and being introduced as the new intern at the board meeting was a memorable and humbling moment.”
The meeting provided Cameron with her first glimpse into the district’s initiatives and the supportive atmosphere fostered within the organization. This initial experience set a positive tone for her internship, making her feel welcome and valued right from the start.
An Eye-Opening Experience
Since then, Cameron has immersed herself in two committees within the district: the Public Safety Committee and the Business and Economic Development Committee. Through her work, she has gained an in-depth understanding of the district’s mission and the daily efforts involved in making Southwest Houston a cleaner, safer, and more connected community.
“It’s fascinating to see the difference the district is making in the area where I live,” she shares, elaborating on her role in these committees. “They’re working on things I never realized were possible—from addressing graffiti and litter to organizing community events. It’s amazing to see how these small, everyday actions add up to create a better quality of life for everyone.”
Through this experience, Cameron has also learned about the challenges the district faces, such as helping residents understand what a management district does.
“A lot of people don’t even know the district exists or what it does,” Cameron observes thoughtfully. “Getting the word out is so important, especially to other young people. I know if more youth were aware, they’d want to be part of this work too.”
Building Connections and People Skills
In addition to the practical experience, Cameron has found great value in the connections she’s built throughout her internship. From meeting board members and law enforcement to engaging with business owners, Cameron sees the internship as an opportunity to expand her network while developing essential skills.
“Everyone is so welcoming and willing to help,” she says with gratitude. “I’ve met people from so many backgrounds—business owners, board members, even police officers. This experience has been fantastic for my personal growth and my ability to connect with people.”
Cameron credits the district’s inclusive environment with helping her feel comfortable and engaged, allowing her to participate actively and contribute meaningfully to each project.
“Even if you’re someone who’s quieter, this is a great place to learn and grow,” she shares thoughtfully. “You start by observing, and before you know it, you’re actively participating and adding value.”
A Strong Recommendation for Peers
Having enjoyed a month with the Southwest Management District, Cameron is enthusiastic about recommending this internship to her classmates and peers. She believes that the supportive environment, combined with the opportunity to make real contributions, makes this an ideal internship for any young person interested in community work.
“The Southwest Management District is incredibly supportive,” she affirms. “They prioritize your education and understand that this is a learning experience. Even within just a few weeks, I’ve learned so much. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to expand their skills and be part of something meaningful.”
Looking Ahead
While Cameron’s main academic focus remains in supply chain management, she has enjoyed the work within the management district so much that she is considering talking with the team about possible future roles after graduation.
“There’s still a lot for me to learn, and I’m really open to seeing where this experience might lead. Who knows?” she adds with a smile. “I might find myself working with the district again in the future.”
Encouraging Youth Involvement
Cameron feels strongly that the management district would benefit from increased youth involvement, seeing it as a vital link between the district’s mission and the community’s future.
“If more young people knew about the district and what it offers, I think we’d see more support and engagement,” she remarks. “It’s an experience I’m proud to be part of, and I want others to have this opportunity too.”
The Southwest Management District remains committed to empowering young leaders and supporting the future of the community through hands-on experience and invaluable opportunities for growth. For more information about internship opportunities, please contact us at [email protected].
