City Council Pop-Off Comments on August 25, 2021

After taking a one week break for the week of August 16, Council was back in session this week. They approved agenda items including the approval of individuals to serve on the first Houston Women’s Commission.

After some discussion, Council approved the spending authority for the Emergency Purchase of Gift Cards and Similar Incentives in connection with the City’s COVID-19 Vaccination Incentive Program – $3,125,00.00 – ARPA Recovery Fund. CM Thomas did ask Mayor Turner is there were any plans at this time to address booster shot incentives which the Mayor said no, not at this time. The item passed with only two Council Members opposed CM Peck and CM Knox.

CM Thomas express her support approving and authorizing the submission of an electronic application for and acceptance of funds through the United Stated Department of Justice for the FY21 Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Grant Program- Mobile Storefront Initiative (“Grant”); declaring the City’s eligibility for such Grant; authorizing the Police Chief of the City of Houston Police Department to act as the City’s representative in the application process, to apply for, accept, and expend the Grant Funds if awarded and to apply for, accept, and expend all subsequent awards, if any, pertaining to the Grant and to extend the budget period.

CM Thomas emphasized the ordinance brings public service to the people. She also acknowledged that this was an item that was a recommendation coming out of police reform recommendations.
