Tackling Drainage in District J

stormwater action 1

The Stormwater Action Team (SWAT) Program was created a few years ago to address localized flooding concerns. District J has seen a number of projects in the SWAT program come to fruition in our neighborhoods.

Residents near Roos and Rowan at Hillcroft reported localized flooding to the District J office. The area was found to have inadequate storm water piping. The recently finished SWAT project increased the number of inlets at the locations and installed larger piping.

In the Bonham Acres neighborhood, a SWAT project has recently broken ground (literally). The roadside ditches in the neighborhood will be regraded, culverts rebuilt and upgraded to the new 24" diameter standard. Driveway aprons will also be replaced.

If we are ever going to solve the drainage challenges of our City, addressing concerns on the local level must be a part of our plan. We want to thank the Chief Resilience Officer, Steve Costello, and the Houston Public Works Department for developing the much-needed SWAT program.

Murals in Gulfton

mulars 1

You may have seen some really cool murals popping up around Gulfton lately. Spearheading the project is the non-profit organization CHAT (Culture of Health - Advancing Together) as a part of their latest initiative - the Gulfton Story Trail. The stories of students and community members in the Gulfton area are the inspiration for 12 murals, which are being painted by local artists.

The projects are made possible through funding from the Hotel Occupancy Tax. Thank you Houston Arts Alliance and Mayor Turner's Complete Communities initiative for helping to make this possible!
