Prostitution crackdown along the "Bissonnet track"

bissonet track

Southwest Management District Board Member, Fred Bhandara and Public Safety Director, Brian Burks participated in a joint press conference today with Harris County Attorney, Vince Ryan, Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner, Police Chief Art Acevedo and others to announce a civil suit addressing prostitution activities in a portion of Bissonnet Blvd. in Southwest Houston.

The suit covers an area of Bissonnet Blvd. known for decades as a source of prostitution. As a result, illegal drug sales and violent crime has taken the place of much of the legitimate business that used to thrive in this portion of Southwest Houston. The suit names numerous known prostitutes, pimps and johns who have been arrested in this portion of Bissonnet and seeks an injunction to bar those persons from reentry. The list of named defendants will likely grow over time as police continue to enforce vice laws in a push to break the cycle.

Not without heart, the suit will work in conjunction with faith based and outreach organizations to make certain prostitutes who want out of the life can receive assistance as others are processed through the criminal justice system. “We needed an edge to break the strangle hold prostitution has on this community” says Burks. “Over time the word will get out: no more business as usual on Bissonnet”!
