Chairman Kenneth LiAs chairman of the board of directors, it is my pleasure to provide you, once again, with an update of the many activities within the Greater Sharpstown Management District––including services that benefit all of us by contributing to the quality of life and improvement of the local business climate.

One of our greatest success stories in recent weeks has been the County Attorney Community Protection Program that the District implemented with Harris County in 2011. Assistant County Attorney Laura Fiorentino Cahill has been very successful in enforcing deed restrictions, stopping illegal dumping, and shutting down businesses that allow criminal activities to occur on the premises.

CEO Gaston Shares Successes of Memorial Hermann Southwest

George GastonGeorge Gaston, CEO of Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, addressed a breakfast meeting of local business leaders March 28 at the Hilton Garden Inn on Beltway 8 and talked about the growth of the hospital–one of Southwest Houston's largest employers.

"We want coming to the hospital to be as safe as stepping onto an airplane," Gaston said, adding that the hospital staff is focused on quality of care as it celebrates its 35th anniversary this year. Memorial Hermann was one of the first major metropolitan hospital systems in the country to put branch hospitals out into the surround communities.

Former Director Wilson Serves TIRZ, UH

Welcome Wilson Jr.Welcome Wilson Jr. just ended his term on the board of directors of the Greater Sharpstown Management District where he has served since its inception, but he is not resting on his laurels.

Instead, this real estate executive will be continuing his service as both a regent for the University of Houston System, and as chairman of the board of the Southwest Houston Redevelopment Authority and Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone Number 20 (TIRZ).

SBA Regional Administrator Addresses Local Business People

Yolanda Garcia - SBA Regional AdministratorU.S. employment is up by 257,000 private sector jobs, and unemployment fell 8.2 percent in January, said Yolanda Garcia Olivarez, the Small Business Administration's Region 6 Administrator, at a luncheon for local business people in February.

"What is important is that 3.7 million jobs have been gained in the 23 months of Obama's administration," Olivarez said. "Sixty seven percent of the jobs created in the last 18 years have been created by small businesses."

HBU Names First Coach to Head Its Football Program

Houston Baptist UniversityHouston Baptist University made a significant move toward launching its football program by hiring Vic Shealy as head coach in early April.

Shealy, who won an NAIA national championship while head coach at Azusa Pacific University in 1998, and most recently served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach the past two seasons at the University of Kansas.

Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration Launches "Year of the Dragon"

Chinese Year of the DragonThe year 2012 roared in with dancing, flaming dragons at the Lunar New Year Celebration Jan. 28 at the Chinese Community Center.

In Chinese culture, the dragon is not a beast to be feared or slain, but a divine creature who bestows power and good fortune, making the Year of the Dragon an auspicious one. The new year was celebrated with a variety of cultural exhibits, traditional Chinese cuisine, and family fun booths representing large corporate sponsors and smaller local businesses outside the center.

March on Crime Luncheon Honors Law Enforcement Officers

March on Crime 2012U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson of the Southern District of Texas was the keynote speaker at the March 16 March on Crime Law Enforcement luncheon, where several officers of the Greater Sharpstown area were acknowledged for exceptional service.

"Houston and Harris County have changed over the years––for the better," said Magidson, who has had a 35-year career as a prosecutor, beginning in the Harris County District Attorney's office.

"We can't do it without you," he added, addressing an audience composed mostly of law enforcement officers at HBU's Morris Cultural Arts Center..
