A Little Warmheartedness in Your Inbox on this Frigid Day

connect community

This past Saturday, Connect team members had the privilege of interviewing candidates for the Breakthrough Houston at Connect 2019 summer program. The room was teeming with bright-eyed 6th graders awaiting the opportunity to convince their interviewer why they belonged in Breakthrough. Heartfelt students gave expression to their dreams of being a chef, a future NBA star, a doctor, an architect and even the president of the United States! And in hearing the aspirations of our Gulfton students, I realized that our future is brighter because our students are daring to dream bigger and set their sights higher. Connect will continue to work hard with its school partners to foster these dreams so that they can one day become a reality.

Good luck to all of the 2019 Breakthrough Houston at Connect candidates!

Thanks to a grant from Specialized, Bike Barn was able to supply KIPP CONNECT Middle School with 27 bikes for their MS150 training team. This past weekend, students went on their longest bike ride yet -- a whole 40 miles! Their ride, dubbed the "Tour de Universities”, included stops at the University of Houston, Texas Southern University and Rice University. At each school, ride leader Michael Skelly sent the kids on a scavenger hunt requiring them to approach university students and get responses to a series of questions (bonus points for asking a girl!) An awesome, if tiring, time was had by all.

We wish the KIPP CONNECT team luck and can't wait to see them at the finish line!
